Solutions: Packaging Automation

Improve efficiency and reduce e-Commerce costs with packaging automation

Meeting the ever-evolving demands of e-Commerce has never been more challenging. As consumer expectations soar, businesses must continue to shorten delivery windows, enhance product protection, prepare smaller order sizes for diverse product assortments, and react to the growing need for customized packaging. FORTNA strategically partners with packaging automation companies Packsize and/or Sitma to design and deliver innovative packaging solutions to address these complexities, delivering unmatched reliability in package handling and order fulfillment.

Optimize Labor. Reduce Costs. Drive Sustainability.

End-of-line packaging has emerged as a key strategic component for efficiently shipping small- to mid-sized items. FORTNA packaging solutions deliver automation that wraps items in paper and/or corrugated boxes, labels the package and enhances the comprehensive customer experience. Our solutions optimize package handling, reduce labor dependency, reduce operational costs, and support sustainability efforts.

Benefits of packaging automation

  • Increased efficiency: automated packaging systems can run faster and longer than a manual packaging process
  • Lower error rates: automated wrapping and labeling ensure accuracy
  • Eco-friendly packaging: right-sized paper packaging and corrugated boxes use eco-friendly materials
  • Rapid ROI: labor and material cost savings paired with increased performance provide for a quicker return on investment
  • Personalized messaging: on-demand printing options allow an operation to print marketing messages directly on the packaging to engage with their customers
  • Lower shipping costs: packaging is fitted for the items being shipped, reducing the item’s dimensions and the space they take up in the delivery truck

Types of packaging automation

There are two types of end-of-line packaging automation: mailers and corrugated boxes.

  • Mailers use paper products to wrap items, seal them, and then print and apply a label.
  • Corrugated boxes follow the same concept, but instead build a right-sized box around the items being shipped.

FORTNA is a preferred partner with Sitma, a global leader in mailer packaging automation, and Packsize, a global leader in corrugated box packaging automation. By leveraging these automated end-of-line packaging solutions, FORTNA helps operators integrate packaging line automation into their current footprint to improve efficiencies, reduce costs and promote sustainability.

FAQs

End-of-line packaging automation refers to automation solutions and equipment used in the final stages of the packaging process prior to shipping. This can include automation that right-sizes an envelope or corrugated cardboard to an order’s dimensions, box and envelope sealing, and labeling automation.

Right-sized packaging is tailored to the specific dimensions of the items being shipped. This eliminates the need for excessive void fillers, minimizing material waste and costs with every shipment while ensuring quality, optimizing vehicle loading capacities and improving sustainability.

The packaging and packaging waste regulation (PPWR) is a new European Union law that went into effect on February 11, 2025 to address the environmental impacts of packaging waste. Under this legislation, by 2030, empty space in packaging can’t exceed 50% of the total package volume. The regulation also includes guidelines to reduce single-use plastic packaging and increase the use of recyclable materials.

The extended producer responsibilities (EPR) are environmental policies that hold producers financially and operationally responsible for end-of-life management of their products, including packaging. Within the U.S., these are state-implemented laws. Restrictions can vary from state to state. EPR laws are active in several states across the U.S., including California, Colorado, Maine, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon and Washington, with others actively considering and proposing legislation. Regions in Canada and other countries around the world also have EPR packing laws in place.

FORTNA packaging automation solutions aren’t just a compliance solution—they are a competitive advantage. These solutions can increase efficiency, optimize labor, reduce transportation costs, drive a rapid ROI, ensure compliance and enhance customer satisfaction.
